Obligatory TEFL certification requirements
Requirements for candidates for the four-week TEFL course in Madrid and online:
- You must agree to have an admissions interview before you are accepted
- You should be 18 years old by the course start date
- You must have a high level of competence in all aspects of English (*)
- You must have completed secondary education and have a qualification to enter higher education.
(*) Non-native English speakers are eligible if they meet the requirements in the Non-native English Speakers section below.
Previous teaching experience is not a requirement.
Optional TEFL certification acceptance enhancers

TEFL Certification requirements for non-native English speakers
In addition to the standard course admission interview, you may be required to show one of the following:
- A degree from a university in one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom or the United States of America
- Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)
- IELTS level 6
- TOEFL (minimum scores 525 on the paper-based test or 80 on the computer-based test)

The Trinity CertTESOL course is designed for those with little or no experience of teaching English.
To prepare yourself for the TEFL course you will be expected to do some up-front pre-course reading and exercises. The pre-course work will introduce you to some of the teaching concepts and keywords that will be used during the course, and get you started with English grammar.

You will have to produce five written assignments during the course, including a test of grammar and phonology. You will also have to complete a minimum of six hours of teaching practice with genuine learners of English. All the above must be completed to Trinity standards, and you will be given lots of professional guidance and support.

CertTESOL
We will let you know your result on the last day of the course when the external moderation and assessment confirm your result. Certificates are then issued to us 4-6 weeks after the end of the course. We will inform you by email when your certificates have arrived. You may pick them up or have them mailed to you.
CertPT
Due to Trinity College London limitations, we file your work for certification when we reach the Trinity required minimum of five submissions or quarterly (every three months), whichever happens first. The quarterly submission dates are the first working day of January, April, July and October.
TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, TEFL for Teaching English as a Foreign Language and TESL for Teaching English as a Second Language.
TEFL is mostly used in the UK and has traditionally been applied to the teaching of English to people for whom English is a foreign language and who will use English largely for short-term study, work or leisure purposes. TESL has traditionally been applied to the teaching of English to people for whom English is a second language in their home country, or people who are settling in an English-speaking country. TESOL is an umbrella term that now usually incorporates the other two acronyms.
CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is a similar teacher training qualification to the Trinity CertTESOL. Although similar in their content, mode of delivery and assessment, the two courses differ in more specific components and types of moderation and assessment. Trinity emphasises reflective journal writing, professional development and self-evaluation for trainees. The British Council accepts both courses as initial TESOL or TEFL qualifications for teachers in its accredited institutions in the UK and its teaching operations overseas.
